U.S.-China to hold trade talks Monday in Beijing

BEIJING – Trade representatives of the United States and China will meet Monday and Tuesday to discuss a range of issues impacting the current trade conflict between the world’s two largest economies, according to a Reuters report.

Citing a statement from China’s commerce ministry, the news agency reported that “a team led by Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Jeffrey Gerrish will come to China to have ‘positive and constructive discussions’.”

Reuters noted a separate statement from the U.S. Trade Representative’s office indicated that under secretaries from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Commerce, Energy and Treasure, “as well as senior officials from those agencies and the White House” would also be members of the delegation.

The talks follow a meeting between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in late 2018, at which the two agreed to pause the implementation of additional tariffs for 90 days, pending further trade discussions between the two powers.

This news along with a positive jobs report helped lift the Dow Jones Industrial Average nearly 600 points in early day trading.
